What good is it my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. — The Letter of James 2:14 - 17
We try to support our local community as well as looking across the world at the many needs brought on by war, natural disasters and poverty. Come and join us in these ventures:
We support our two local food banks, the Caring Cupboard in Rodney and the Daffodil Society in Dutton with regular donations of food and money. Our members also deliver food packages when asked by West Elgin Community Services.
We support the “Food Box” program which is an initiative of the West Elgin Community Health Centre.
In 2018 and again in 2019 we sent four area children for a week at Huron Camp. These families could not otherwise have afforded to send their children to camp. Two were from our local First Nations community and two were from our local community. Check out the camp website at camphuron.ca.
Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbour in your land.” — Deuteronomy 15:11
We sponsor two foster children in Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in the world: Jemima (left) and Palamanga (right).
They are both 17 years old and according to their school reports, are thriving. We have been supporting them for a number of years and have watched their progress with interest. We enjoy receiving their letters. (Palamanga recently graduated from the program and has been replaced by three year old Zenabou. Jemima is also due to graduate shortly and will be replaced by another young person in need)
We support the leprosy mission. In the next 24 hours 50 children will hear the words “You have leprosy”. This terrible disease, which features prominently in the Bible, is still ravaging tens of thousands of people in the developing world, even though it is completely curable. Because it still carries so much stigma, people with the disease do not report it soon enough and do not seek treatment. Learn more at the Leprosy Mission of Canada website www.effecthope.org. We donate sufficient money to completely cure three people each year.
Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. — Matthew 10:8
Have you heard of the charity "Sleeping Children around the World”? Check out their website at www.scaw.org. A bed kit comprises:
A mat or mattress/bedding
A mosquito net to combat the threat of malaria & other vector-borne disease
Schoolbag and school supplies
Clothing and footwear
More than a million children in 34 countries have benefitted from this gift since the charity was founded in 1970. We fund four bed kits every year.
We try to respond to special appeals for the victims of natural disasters, wars and poverty. We look for appeals that will match our donation, or multiply it by 3 or even sometimes 5 times, so we can maximize our gift. Our favourite charity for this kind of gift is the “Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund" www.pwrdf.org in part because it is an initiative of the Anglican Church of Canada, but also because 100% of donations go towards relief, as the cost to run it does not come from donations. They also do great work.
